The house style known as Craftsman Bungalow are famous for their quality construction, use of natural materials, and unique personalities that can change from house to house. These homes are typically built prior to 1940, and homeowners all over the US are forming communities online to show their pride in the remodel and preservation of the original character. Blogs such as Bungalowcious, the Bungalow Guy, and Laurelhurst Craftsman show the love and care homeowners shower on their historic craftsman bungalows.
My craftsman bungalow story is certainly unique: in order to preserve my own historic windows, I invented Indow Windows, and am now on a mission to help homeowners across the country to preserve their original windows while conserving energy.
That’s right: it all started here in my charming craftsman bungalow located in Portland, OR. I loved the rippling glass, but I hated the chill it brought during the winters, and I knew the amount of energy I was wasting was incredibly harmful to the environment. Replacement options brought the bill up to $30,000 and I knew I would lose the charm of the original windows with their rippling glass and old growth timber construction. Other storm windows either damaged the existing frame or took away from the beauty I was trying to hard to preserve.
One day, I looked at my refrigerator door and thought, “that’s it!” We developed a compression tubing and Indow Windows was born.
I am so excited to be helping other homeowners achieve the comfort and energy savings they deserve in their historic homes, especially in other craftsman bungalows. There are still a billion single pane windows in the United States though! We really have our work cut out for us, but our vision of comfort and sustainability is continually driving us forward. It’s amazing to see these communities of homeowners who want to take enjoy their existing windows while reducing their impact on the environment and increasing their comfort. It is attainable, and I am proud that Indow Windows is helping work towards that solution.
